Are mediums born or trained? I believe the answer is “both.”
Everyone is born with the capacity to develop their psychic medium abilities. If you think you’re able to connect with spirit guides or loved ones on the Other Side, you probably can. Does that mean you’re ready to become a professional medium? The answer: Maybe …
Some people are interested in nurturing their medium abilities so that they can communicate with their own loved ones who have passed. Others explore making these personal connections as the first step along a professional path.
If you’re already a highly intuitive person, you’ll probably know when it’s the right time to work on developing your medium abilities. But if you’re not exactly sure, here are some other signs.
You’re Ready to Pursue Your Path to Mediumship When…
You believe. Skeptics can’t communicate with their loved ones on the Other Side because their minds are closed to the possibility that souls remain connected between the physical and spiritual realms. Guided by their own spiritual convictions, mediums strongly believe in connection that transcends time, space and realms.

You can trust the unseen. Mediumship involves significant trust in the intangible — a confidence in things you may not be able to see, hear or touch with your five physical senses. An inability to trust in the unseen is the first big hurdle most beginning mediums need to overcome.
You have an open mind. Messages and evidence from the Other Side often require interpretation. Some signs won’t make sense to you, yet will carry profound meaning for your client.
An open mind will allow you welcome and share messages that may appear unclear, odd or ambiguous to you, and allow you to explore them a bit deeper.
You’re able to detach. Mediumship requires objectivity. (This is why professional mediums sometimes go see other mediums to get a reading!) As a professional medium, you need a level of discernment that allows you to separate your own feelings and experiences in order to be of service to your clients.
You have a high level of emotional intelligence. Readings can be very intimate and emotional for your clients. Your emotional intelligence means that you can respond to their emotions effectively and appropriately — not too little, not too much, but “just right” … even while maintaining your open connection with Spirit.
Equally important, emotional intelligence enables you to manage your own feelings to ensure that the reading never becomes about you. For example, if you frequently break into tears when you feel a client’s emotional pull toward their loved one, then you aren’t managing yourself in a way that allows you to stay out of the way.
You can distinguish between memory, imagination and connection. While training to become a professional medium will help you develop the sensitivity to make these distinctions with greater ease, recognizing the difference at the outset is helpful.
Memory is a function of the brain “clicking” through its storage files. It helps you recall specific details about a person’s physical appearance, their voice or even the signature cologne they wore.
Imagination also invokes the brain, but in a different manner. When you imagine, you create scenarios with your mind’s eye.
Connection just happens. It’s more of a knowing, or feeling. Messages “drop in” — often, at seemingly random times. (Without veering too far off course, this is called an unintentional connection. Readings rely on intentional connections.)
You have the right motivation. When a loved one passes, the grief can feel overwhelming. It’s natural to want to hear from them, connect with them and feel their presence. And if that’s why you want to develop your medium abilities, great!
But becoming a professional medium is about being in service to others. You feel it as your calling. While it’s natural to take pride in your work, it’s not about you. The focus is on the connection and healing that you’re providing to your clients and to those on the Other Side.
